Gurum Communities Honoured Rt. Rev. Nyenbenso
The indigenes of Gurum in Bonotem Diocese organized a reception in honour of their son the Rt. Rev. Jediel Momsisuri Nyenbenso the third Bishop of Bonotem Diocese. The reception which took place at Gurum Nongvan the headquarters of Fleming Division and the first mission Station in Chamba. It was a very history occasion as the sons and daughters of the land turned up en masse.
The Guest Speaker at the occasion Mr. Polycarp Kaigama took the gathering through memory lane. He reiterated the significance of Gurum in the Christian history of the Chamba people. The Guest Speaker narrated how Mr. Fleming came to Gurum in 1924. According to the speaker since the first Sudan United Mission (SUM) Missionary in Chamba land came to Gurum it was historic for a Bishop to emanate from there. According to him Gurum has remain very significant in Chamba land because of the civilization that Christian mission brought to the land.
Mr. Polycarp said, “Mr Fleming said “I will go and work among the Chamba people.” The Speaker charged the Bishop to be in the forefront of uniting the people of Chamba land and diocese. “You are in a complex society. There is religious differences and other challenges. I believe that you will be able to conquer. Our people have become lazy and we are divided.” He prayed that God who gave Rt. Rev Jediel Nyenbenso the work of a Bishop will use him to solve some of the problems of the land. He called on both Christians and Muslims to support the Bishop and ensure that he has moved the land and the church to greater height.
Speaking at the occasion in one of the goodwill messages, Mr. Gilbert Tenense an educationist said, “We are celebrating progress. But we must ask ourselves, what can we do to further progress? How can we do it so that our church can progress in Chamba land? We must all unite and work together for the progress of the church. We need to support the Bishop in this work that God has given him.” On the issue among Chamba people Mr. Tenense said until the chamba people are united as it was in the past there will be no any meaningful progress. “Our land is not progressing because of religious differences. The division between Christians and Muslims was never there. We are brothers and sisters, we need to unite and carry each other along, these differences must stop. Unity should come from all of us. If we remain divided we will fall.”
As a teacher Mr. Tenense took the opportunity to encourage parents to send their children to school. “Let us send our children to school. Let us pay their fees, one day we will be happy that we did it. See what school has done to us, without school we wouldn’t have been here today celebrating. No people can progress without education.” He further charged the youths to be law abiding and hardworking. “Do not take laws in to your hands. We must learn to follow the leaders and give them their due respect, either the government, church or traditional leaders.”
An elder statesman in Adamawa state and Chamba land retired Justice Bemare Bansi presented a life-inspiring paper on leadership. He maintained that God alone is the one who gives position of leadership and to whoever He wants. Justice Bansi took his backing references from both the Bible and the Quran. He emphasized that there was never a leader in history that was not made by God either for the punishment of the people or for their progress. He called on the people to support the leadership of Rt. Rev. Jediel Nyenbenso.
The deputy Governor of Adamawa State Hon. Martin Babale was represented at the occasion by one of Special Advisers Mr. Hamza Balisopso. Hon. Babale called for unity among the Chamba people and charged them also to support the Bishop to succeed.
The occasion was climaxed by the presentation of gifts to the Bishop. There was also cultural dance by some dancing troops.
